Legislature to decide higher education budget Friday
The Nevada legislature is scheduled to finalize the Nevada System of Higher Education’s budget on Friday, May 8. The meeting will be held at 8 a.m. in room 3137 of the Legislative Building in Carson City. There will be time for public comment. Speakers should provide 19 copies of any exhibits and notes. The meeting will also be broadcasted online at http://www.leg.state.nv.us under the "listen to live meetings" link.Town Hall Meeting
Glick to host town hall meeting
University of Nevada, Reno president Milton Glick will be hosting a town hall meeting on May 13. It will be held at 10 a.m. in the Jot Travis Auditorium.Glick said that he excepts that the legislature will have decided on the budget for the higher education by this time.

Regents to finalize cuts May 12
After the Nevada Legislature finalizes the higher education budget, the Board of Regents will hold a special meeting on May 12. The regents, who have the final say on any tuition increases or special fees that may be implemented in the fall, will determine the final budgets for each of the Nevada System of Higher Education institutions, including the University of Nevada, Reno, said Scott Wasserman, the BOR chief of staff. The meeting will be held at 8 a.m. May 12 via teleconference at the System Administration building on the north end of the UNR campus. It will be open to the public. Those in the audience can talk about the cuts during the public comment section of the meeting. An agenda for the meeting will be posted later today.Budget Data
Revenue from student fees, tuition has almost doubled since 2000
This chart shows the amount of money that UNR has generated in student registration fees, non-resident tuition and miscellaneous fees. Since 2000, the total amount that UNR has received from students has increased by over $20 million.
Note: for the 2005-2006 school year, no data was listed for “miscellaneous student fees.”

New revenue needed to prevent deep cuts, senate leader says
After economists predicted that the budget gap would grow to $3 billion, state senate majority leader Steven Horsford (D-Las Vegas) said the state would need to make sacrifices to save education.
Horsford said the legislature will need to increase taxes “to fund education and health care for children and seniors.”
