cord blood donations

There are many types of bodily donations that can be made from one person to another person. Donations can come from blood, organs, limbs, and many other parts of the human body. These any many other donations can save humans lives. But what if there was a way to donate a body part from a newborn to save a life in the future? The answer is cord blood donation. Cord blood is the blood that remains in a baby’s umbilical cord after it has been cut and is rich in newborn stem cells. The potential for using stem cells to treat a number of common illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, is one of the most promising areas of medical research. Most families bank their newborn’s stem cells with cord blood registry for piece of mind, knowing that the stem cells may be lifesaving to their baby and other family members they only have one chance to collect and save them.
Dr. Terrence McGaw, MD Obstetrician/Gynecologist, of women’s health specialist of Nevada, recommends cord blood donating to all of his patients who are about to have newborns.
“Considering that more than 75 diseases are already being treated with stem cells, and the fact that the number will very likely increase in the coming years, cord blood banking is a crucial investment in any family’s health”, he said.
McGaw states that cord blood is an important investment to save a life someday in the future. But how much does this cord blood donation cost, and how many families can afford this type of investment?
“ There are several payment options so that every family can try to take advantage of our proven and trusted cord blood banking service,” he said.“ There is a fair amount of my patients who can afford this service, but there is also many who cannot.” This service can cost up to $1,700.”
Instead of waiting until later on in life for something to happen where there could be a possibility of a donation, maybe cord blood donation is something that could be looked at by more patients by talking to their doctors before a new baby is born. The possibility of knowing that there is insurance on a newborn’s life through cord blood, is something that a person cannot put a price on.
