UNR Howl at the Moon, Harry Potter style.

The Associated Students of The University of Nevada Reno in coordination with Flidside Productions held their annual Howl at the Moon event Friday, April 22, at the Joe Crawley Student Union.

This year’s event was Harry Potter themed, titled “Wizards, Wands, and Wolves.”

Kayla Valy, a 19-year-old freshman at UNR, volunteered for the event, but not because of her love of Harry potter.

“The fact that all 4 floors of the Joe were going to be used and decorated just really excited me,” she said.

Each floor of the Joe was decorated in Hogwarts, the magical wizarding school of the Harry Potter phenomena, fashion and included various activities, both Harry Potter related and not.

In addition to Harry Potter trivia, crafts, and games, an oxygen bar, bounce houses, a mechanical bull, and a gyroscope ride were located throughout the student union. Free Port of Subs was provided as well as cotton candy and a variety of other snacks. A free showing of the latest Harry Potter movie, The Deathly Hallows, was playing in the theater.

The event had a very large turnout. Geoffrey Green, the Late Nights and Weekend Event Coordinator for Flipside who planned the event, said that it brought about 650 people to the Joe, which is the largest crowd that any of his events has drawn.

Green said he chose the Harry Potter theme because it is very popular and recognizable for the college generation.

“We grew up into it. I knew that it would bring more diverse students to the event than the usual students who always come to ASUN sponsored events,” he said.

Valy agreed that the theme made Howl at the Moon such a huge success.

“From what I’ve been to of Flipside’s productions, this was definitely in the top 5,” she said, “it’s the last movie, so people are even more crazy about Harry Potter now.”
